Wear debris may be a critical issue during orthodontic treatments and the development of new orthodontic adhesives or mechanical devices. This study aimed at evaluating, by means of a double mask system, the possible influence of a resin on the wear of a polished and unpolished titanium surface. A resin-based surface finishing system (Silane + Ti) was used to develop a new dental material, which was compared with a traditional resin coating technique (Silane + Ti + Sil). The second, reference material was a stainless steel control (SS + Ti). The surface roughness (Ra) was assessed before and after the treatments by means of the profilometry technique. The uncoated surfaces (Ra = 0.2 +/- 0.03 microm) were smoother than the coated ones (Ra = 0.13 +/- 0.01 microm). After polishing, the roughness of the polished Ti and SS was reduced and, after resin application, no significant difference was found. After resin-based application, the polished SS (Ra = 0.13 +/- 0.01 microm) was smoother than the polished Ti (Ra = 0.24 +/- 0.01 microm). The Rz of the polished Ti and SS after a double coating was lower than that of the unpolished samples. The obtained results revealed the presence of an ultrasonic coating on the surface of the polished titanium and the use of a double-coating technique for stainless steel.
